What If You Can’t Afford Funeral Expenses

When a loved one dies, families are often faced with difficult decisions at an already emotional time. If paying for funeral, burial, or cremation services seems impossible, it is important to know that there are options.

The first step is to speak openly with a funeral provider about your financial circumstances. Most funeral homes have basic options which are designed to be as affordable as possible. These include a direct cremation or what is known as an immediate burial. Neither includes a memorial or formal burial service.  A funeral professional can help you understand which of the services they offer are necessary and which are optional. They may also be able to provide information about payment options and local resources.

General relief assistance may be available when resources are not available. Loans of up to $450 may be available for a direct cremation. These loans may be used through specific mortuaries that provide only cremations. Eligibility requirements apply, so families should contact the Orange County Social Services Agency for current information.

Another helpful resource is 2-1-1 Orange County, a free and confidential referral service that connects families with local government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Calling 2-1-1 can help identify possible financial assistance and other community resources.

Families should also check whether the deceased had life insurance, veterans’ benefits, Social Security-related benefits, employer benefits, or other resources that may help with final expenses. In some situations, charitable organizations, faith communities, or family members may also be able to assist.
