Andrew Bradley Ganahl

Andrew Bradley Ganahl, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away after a months-long illness on Sunday, August 2nd, at the age of 78. He was dearly loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. Andy was known for his passionate intelligence, his contemplative and spiritual character, and his deep loyalty to his family.

Andrew (Andy) was born in Anaheim, CA on June 12th, 1948, to John and Catherine (Pat) Ganahl. He was the third of four sons and one of eight children of John and Pat. He married his high school sweetheart, Candyce Mary Callahan, on September 16th, 1972. Andy and Candyce were married for nearly 54 years before his passing. They raised two sons, Andrew and Joseph, in Corona, CA, where they moved in 1980. Andy was a loving presence in the lives of his sons, granddaughters, and his many nieces and nephews.

Andy graduated from Anaheim’s Servite High School in 1966 before enrolling at the University of California at Santa Barbara. After a tour of duty in the United States Army in the late 1960s, during which he served in Kitzingen, Germany, he returned to UCSB to complete his degree in English Literature in 1973. He worked for many years at the family lumber company, Ganahl Lumber, until leaving in the early 1980s. From 1983 until his retirement in 2010, he worked for W.R. Grace & Company as a salesman in its construction products division.

Andy loved playing sports with his two sons. Baseball, basketball, and flag football – he studied and coached them all. He loved to hike with his sons in Yosemite and enjoyed skiing in the Sierras and the Rockies. Andy also treasured spending time with his extended family, with frequent holiday gatherings and annual stays in Newport Beach with his siblings and his many nieces and nephews.

Besides his family, Andy’s greatest joy in life was working on his expansive organic garden at his home in Corona, CA. He will be remembered for his generosity to his neighbors and the local food bank, with whom he shared the abundant produce – avocados, citrus, bananas, berries and so much more from the “the ranch”. After his retirement from Grace, he spent most of his daily hours designing and executing plans in his garden, always reimagining what his garden could be, from making homemade compost to practicing crop rotation for soil health.

Andy had a substantial library spanning a wide variety of subjects, and he enjoyed spirited debates on everything from politics to philosophy and religion. He raised his two boys to value learning and continuous self-improvement. He was always quick at hand with a koan and a unique perspective on any given situation, drawing on his deep knowledge of history and religion.

Andy is survived by his loving wife Candyce Mary Ganahl; his two sons, Andrew Callahan Ganahl (Robin) of Kansas City, MO, and Joseph Ganahl (Ivana Karacic) of Frankfurt, Germany; his granddaughters Alisa Rose Ganahl and Lauren Nicole Ganahl, of Kansas City, MO; his brothers John Ganahl, Peter Ganahl and Patrick Ganahl; and his sisters Mary Ganahl, Louise Delaney, Jane Lyons and Nancy Humbarger.

The funeral service will be held at St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 16th at 10:00am at 1316 N Acacia Ave, Fullerton, CA 92831.
