International Family Day: A Legacy of Care Across Generations
International Family Day, observed each year on May 15, is a global reminder of the vital role families play in shaping our communities. Around the world, the day is celebrated with family gatherings, cultural events, and activities that encourage connection across generations. Established by the United Nations in 1993, celebrations held on this day vary across the globe. Communities may hold family-centered festivals and events, schools may host educational workshops or provide opportunities for people to volunteer to support families in their neighborhoods.
The common theme is clear: family is the foundation of tradition, values, and lasting bonds.
Here in Anaheim, that message resonates deeply at Hilgenfeld Mortuary. For nearly 100 years, the mortuary has remained a fourth-generation, family-owned business—serving the community from the very same location where it began. The guiding principles and core values set forth in 1927, still remain as the key components of funeral services provided to families in the North Orange County area.
Founded by Reverend Samuel Hilgenfeld, the business was built on compassion and personal service. His son Melvin continued that legacy, followed by granddaughter Margie Hilgenfeld Field. Today, great-granddaughter Becky Areias carries those same values forward, honoring the family’s history while serving families with care and dignity. This continuity is rare. Remaining family-owned through four generations reflects dedication not just to a business, but to a calling. Decisions are guided by long-standing values, not outside interests. It means serving neighbors as neighbors, honoring family stories and preserving legacies.
On International Family Day, we are proud to celebrate the enduring importance of family—both the families we serve and the family legacy that guides us.
